Background of the Study

The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in academic activities has become a crucial factor in enhancing the quality of education globally. ICT provides a platform for both students and educators to access, share, and collaborate on educational content in more interactive and innovative ways. The Faculty of Arts at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi State, is not exempt from this global trend. The use of ICT in academic activities among students in this faculty is vital in ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills to thrive in the modern digital world.

The importance of ICT in education has been widely acknowledged in recent years. According to Owusu-Ansah et al. (2022), ICT tools in education enhance students' learning experiences by providing them with access to a vast array of resources and enabling personalized learning. Moreover, ICT facilitates communication between students and lecturers, allowing for more effective dissemination of information and feedback (Khan et al., 2023). As a result, students can engage in collaborative learning, which is essential for the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Despite these benefits, there are challenges associated with the use of ICT in academic activities. Many students face difficulties in accessing the necessary technology due to financial constraints or lack of infrastructure. Additionally, some students may not have the requisite skills to effectively utilize ICT tools, which can hinder their academic performance. As Komba and Mcharazo (2021) noted, the digital divide remains a significant barrier to the effective use of ICT in education, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria.

Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of ICT in ensuring the continuity of education during crises. With the shift to online learning, the need for effective ICT integration in academic activities has become more pressing. According to Adeoye et al. (2021), the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of ICT in education, but it has also exposed the gaps in digital literacy and access to technology among students.

In light of these developments, it is crucial to assess the use of ICT by students in the Faculty of Arts at Sa'adu Zungur University. Understanding the extent to which students are utilizing ICT for their academic activities, as well as the challenges they face, can provide valuable insights for improving the quality of education in the faculty.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of ICT in enhancing academic activities, there are still significant challenges that students face in effectively utilizing these technologies. The Faculty of Arts at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi State, like many other institutions, has implemented ICT tools to support students' learning processes. However, the extent to which these tools are being used and the effectiveness of their application in academic activities remain unclear.

One of the key problems is the uneven access to ICT resources among students. While some students have the necessary devices and internet connectivity to engage in online learning and research, others are limited by inadequate access. This disparity can lead to unequal educational outcomes and perpetuate the digital divide within the faculty.

Another issue is the level of digital literacy among students. Even when students have access to ICT tools, they may not have the skills required to use them effectively for academic purposes. This lack of digital literacy can hinder students' ability to engage fully with the educational opportunities provided by ICT.

Moreover, there are concerns about the support systems in place for students to use ICT effectively. The availability of technical support, training, and resources to help students navigate ICT tools is crucial for ensuring that all students can benefit from these technologies. The absence of such support can exacerbate the challenges faced by students in using ICT for their academic activities.

This study seeks to address these problems by assessing the use of ICT among students in the Faculty of Arts at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi State. The findings of this study will provide insights into the barriers to effective ICT use and offer recommendations for enhancing the integration of ICT in academic activities.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant both practically and theoretically. Practically, it offers insights into the current state of ICT usage among students in the Faculty of Arts at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi State. By identifying the barriers to effective ICT usage, the study provides actionable recommendations for educators, administrators, and policymakers to enhance the integration of ICT in academic activities. This can lead to improved educational outcomes, greater student engagement, and better preparedness for the digital economy.

Theoretically, the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge on ICT in education, particularly in the context of higher education in Nigeria. It adds to the understanding of how ICT can be leveraged to improve academic performance and reduce educational inequalities. The study also explores the relationship between digital literacy and academic success, offering new insights into the importance of equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate the digital world.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to students of the Faculty of Arts at Sa'adu Zungur University, Bauchi State. The study focuses on assessing the use of ICT for academic activities, including factors such as access to ICT resources, digital literacy, and the impact of ICT on academic performance. While the findings of this study may offer valuable insights, they are specific to the context of this faculty and may not be generalizable to other faculties or universities.

One of the limitations of this study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may be subject to bias. Additionally, the study does not consider the perspectives of faculty members or administrators, which could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with ICT usage in the faculty. Finally, the study is limited by the availability of resources and time, which may affect the depth of the analysis.
